While working my way through the top stories in 24 hours on Digg, I came across this very strange picture. Upon further investigation, it turns out to be a hole in the ground that has been burning for over 35 years. Located in Darvaz, Uzbekistan, this crater was created as a result of a failed Russian gas exploration project in the 1950′s. When the ground caved in, gas began to seep out and eventually caught on fire. This fire has been burning nonstop. For more information and pictures, check out the following links:
